About SymSonic
The mission of Symsonic: To provide a voice for emerging composers
that would otherwise be unavailable
Symsonic music was created by composer David Olen Baird as a publishing
house, production company, and record company. As David began his composing
career, he was dismayed at the lack of direct support available to talented
emerging composers. The vast majority of programs designed to support
the performing arts are aimed at performing organizations, and almost always
require special tax status as a non profit organization. Since the commissioning
of new works is often not at the top of performing organization's priorities,
and since direct grants to composers are rare, it is particularly difficult
for the individual composer to find the funding to produce their works.
Symsonic was created to turn this situation around by putting the
composer nearer the top of the food chain - by providing opportunities
to have their music produced, performed or recorded - by "commissioning"
talented performers or performing organizations to perform or record the
works of emerging composers.
Symsonic was created with these founding principles:
- Composers should not have to pay for their work to be performed
or recorded.
- Symsonic will strive to work with the best performers possible
and always pay them properly for their services.
- Whither our gifts, they shall be used for the greatest good.
The First Pressings Program:
The first pressing program is all about forming partnerships between
composers, deserving community organizations, performers and underwriting
donors.
- The composers receive exposure of their work via a professionally
produced recording of their original work. They receive a number of the
recordings for their own use.
- The community organizations receive the bulk of the first
pressing (usually 1000 to 1500 CDs) to use in a promotional campaign or
as a contribution premium.
- The performers receive exposure of their work via a professionally
produced recording, are paid for their studio work and receive a portion
of those recordings for their own use.
- The donors are assured that there contribution will be matched
by individual donations via distribution of the recordings, thus leveraging
their investment by as much as two to three times.
The first pressing program is successful when the composer, the community
organization, the performers and donors
- All share a belief in the value of music as a force for good ,
and
- All share a belief in the value of the work of the community organization.
